Maha Hmayed is a Lebanese Detroit-based mixed media analog collage and lens-based artist. She channels inspiration from the ethereal realms of her dreams, working intuitively and tapping into her subconscious mind through the exploration of the human psyche, desires, fears, and the interpretation of symbols; weaving together themes of sex, femininity, and the transcendence of the possible, while exploring the dichotomy of heaven and hell. Incorporating elements of nature, with a particular focus on metamorphosis and transformation, she frequently depicts hybrid creatures and distorted landscapes to convey a sense of the uncanny. Through the incorporation of Arabic script, Maha not only pays homage to her cultural roots but also invites viewers into a richer understand- ing of the nuanced layers within her creations. This inclusion becomes a visual dialogue, forging a con- nection between her personal narrative and a broader audience, fostering a bridge between worlds, and in- viting a cross cultural exploration through the lens of art. Her primary artistic mission is to elicit a sense of detachment from the self, transporting viewers to the unique landscapes of her mind–fleeting from reality.
